The Bioreactor Manufacturing Team Lead is a production team member who actively leads the Bioreactor manufacturing team and co-ordinates operations to ensure timely completion of batches, while actively participating and supporting production of antigens in bioreactors.

Our client, Microbix Biosystems is a fast growing biotechnology company based in Mississauga.

Founded in 1988 as a producer of infectious disease antigens, primarily for the diagnostics market, Microbix invests in the virology business to build capacity and develop new products to address emerging market opportunities, while enhancing manufacturing and laboratory capabilities and technologies.

Building on expertise in virology and protein biochemistry, the Microbix developed a pipeline of selected biological technologies including VIRUSMAX (Influenza Virus Yield Enhancement Technology), LumiSort (Semen Sexing Technology) and the thrombolytic drug, Kinlytic (Urokinase).

Our emerging products take aim at large market opportunities. With Microbix' core competencies in the Diagnostics business, including cell culture, molecular biology, and GMP quality system, these new products build on Microbix' strength.

Primary Function:

  • "Team Lead" is responsible for coordinating a team of technicians for executing multi batch bioreactor manufacturing of product.
  • Direct line of report / interacts with Manager/Director
  • Routine assembly, operation and sanitization of bioreactors, including single use and autoclavable vessels;
  • Perform bioreactor equipment function checks, preventative maintenance, standardization and calibration of bioreactor components (pumps and probes);
  • Operate Bioflo 320 Bioprocess Control station (i.e. navigate bioreactor operating systems for process operation and performance to produce antigens).
  • Adjust process control setpoints and interpret numerical and graphical process control outputs to verify bioreactor operation.
  • Monitor cell culture performance in bioreactors using biochemistry analyzer;
  • Review metabolite data, calculate and adjust the perfusion rate based on the calculated consumption rate;
  • Adjust critical parameters based on the results of metabolite monitoring;
  • Act as technical resource for the group / First line problem solver / Simple trouble shooting, and maintains work flow.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Monitor inventory levels on a weekly basis and provide the supervisor with orders as required, considering lead times required for delivery.
  • Participation with other members of the manufacturing culture team on cell and seed revival, scale up and culture of bulk quantities of viral antigen.
  • Prepare sterile buffers and reagents as required by the processing demands.  Dispense buffers and reagents as required for processing as required.
  • Complete all documentation accurately and thoroughly on approved recording documents as tasks are performed.

Education:

B.Sc. or M.Sc. in a relevant biological sciences or chemical/biochemical engineering with at least 2 years of bioreactor experience in an industrial setting.

Experience/Knowledge:

Minimum of 2 years' industrial experience in a bioreactor manufacturing/production environment:

  • Strong proficiency in molecular and cellular biology, virology and engineering principles, techniques and demonstrated abilities in applying that knowledge.
  • Previous industry experience in virology and adherent mammalian cell culture.
  • Scientific knowledge and demonstrated hands-on experience in cell culture technologies applied to viral production.
  • Aptitude and interest for hands-on work with various mechanical, electrical, and microfluidic devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow established guidelines and protocols and to complete work assignments in effective and efficient manner.
  • Strong attention to detail in a past paced industrial work environment.
  • Good math and computer skills.
  • Strong communication and organization skills; be able to multi-task; be highly self-motivated, flexible, be able to collaborate and work effectively in teams.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with packed/fixed bed bioreactors will be considered a strong asset.
  • Experience in contributing to the design, modification and optimization of cell culture as it pertains to bioreactor processes.
  • Experience with cGMP manufacturing under cGMP compliance is a plus.
